Suspect dies after deputy-involved shooting outside DeLand Walmart, officials say

A deputy-involved shooting has occurred outside a Walmart Neighborhood Market in DeLand, Florida. The incident began Friday night when a reckless driver fled from police, speeding away with the headlights off, running red lights and fleeing west on State Road 44. After being located around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, deputies located the vehicle and the driver accelerated and attempted to flee again as deputies approached the vehicle. During the encounter, a deputy fired a shot through the windshield, striking the driver. The driver was taken to a local hospital and no other injuries were reported. The shopping center parking lot remains closed to the public while the investigation continues.
