CPAC lands in new Hungarian PM’s crosshairs

Opposition leader Péter Magyar has targeted the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) as a target for his anti-corruption efforts in Hungary, accusing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of diverting taxpayer money to CPAC and promising to cut off the flow of government funds. The Conservative Party has deep roots in Hungary and hosted its first conference there in 2022, and has been a vocal supporter of Orbán for years. However, Hungarian authorities will investigate the "criminal offense" of mixing party financing with government spending. Magyara also plans to stop alleged state funding of the Matthias Corvinus Collegium, an influential think tank managed by Orbán’s political director and aligned with his Fidesz political party. The Center for Fundamental Rights, an Orban-aligned Hungarian think tank, is reportedly supported by the Hungarian government through the Batthyány Lajos Foundation. The Office of Government Ethics dropped Kevin Warsh’ financial disclosures on Warsh's financial disclosures earlier today, as the confirmation fight for Fed Chair Jerome Powell begins for Warsh, who is worth at least $131 million.
