Google has developed a new AI tool, Groundsource, that can predict flash floods up to 24 hours in advance. The tool uses Gemini AI to scan millions of news articles published since 2000 and identify references to flood events. The result is a dataset of 2.6 million historical flash floods spanning over 150 countries. It was used to train a new model to predict whether a flash flood would hit an urban area in the next 24 hours. The forecasts are now live on Google's Flood Hub, the platform used to warn roughly 2 billion people about river-related flooding worldwide. Despite its limitations, the system has been praised for its ability to predict how bad a flood will be.
