A new Netflix docusery, Trust Me: The False Prophet, has gone undercover to investigate the cult-like sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), where cult leader Warren Jeffs used his influence to build an insular community and abuse young girls. The documentary, directed by Rachel Dretzin and Christine Marie, gives audiences a behind-the-scenes look at the FLDS community and its attempted new leader, Sam Bateman. Bateman built a tight-knit community around claims that he was Jeffs' religious heir, and was convicted of sexually abusing 23 women, nine of whom were minors. Despite his conviction, many believed that he could replace Jeffs, who was also a prophet, and used this to manipulate the community's behavior. The docuseries also reveals that Bateman used his arrogance to lead to his eventual downfall.
