The Pentagon has given senior Pentagon leadership and military commanders a 180-day deadline to remove all of Anthropic's AI products from their systems. The Defense Department alleges that Anthropic’s technology poses an “unacceptable supply chain risk” for use in all systems and networks. The order was issued in a March 6 internal memo signed by Pentagon Chief Information Officer Kirsten Davies. The memo also instructs any company with business ties to the DOD to stop using Anthropic products on work related to Pentagon contracts. Anthropic is challenging the Pentagon's designation as a supply chainrisk, arguing that the Constitution does not allow the government to punish a company for its protected speech.
