Sen. Moreno asks Senate witnesses to swear their think tanks don’t take Mexican drug cartel money

Sen. Bernie Moreno, a Westlake Republican, used a Senate hearing on sanctuary cities to demand that two think tank witnesses, David Bier and Brendan Duke, sign affidavits stating their organizations receive no funding from Mexican drug cartels. This confrontation came during the hearing called “Sanctuary Cities: The Cost of Undermining Law and Order” which was being conducted to examine the public safety and fiscal costs of local policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Bier, whose Cato Institute is a libertarian-leaning think tank, and Duke, whose Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is a progressive-leaning fiscal policy research organization, both deny receiving any drug cartel money. Moreno offered no proof to support these claims. The hearing split sharply along ideological ideological lines.
