The Illinois State Police (ISP) has broken ground on a $8.9 million canine facility in Pawnee, south of Springfield, with the state's Capital Development Board and the Department of Public Safety. The training facility consists of two new buildings, one of which houses office space for up to 80 staff members, classrooms, and a kennel that can house up to 20 dogs. The new facility will allow for indoor and outdoor training. The department has increased its use of canines in its cases and has incorporated new technology and techniques as criminals have evolved their methods. The canine training program teaches dogs to track human odors, which helps them track criminals and assist in missing persons cases.
