Some of rap music's biggest names, including Killer Mike, T.I., Young Thug, Fat Joe, and N.O.R.E., have supported James Garfield Broadnax, who is currently on death row in Texas for killing two men in 2009. Prosecutors introduced his rap lyrics during deliberations for his death sentence. His lawyers have asked the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) to halt his execution and review his case. They argue that the use of rap lyrics in the trial was unconstitutional and that rap music is protected by the First Amendment and that criminalizing rap music infringes on those rights. The brief by Killer Mike and others argued that rap lyrics are fiction, not autobiography.
