Japanese homebuilders go on a U.S. shopping spree

Japanese companies have purchased two U.S. homebuilders in one month, extending a trend that has seen an increase in their market share over the past decade. Sumitomo Forestry acquired Tri Pointe Homes for $4.5 billion, and aims to supply 23,000 homes annually in the US by 2030. This acquisition marks the third public home builder acquisition by Japanese firms. The companies now own 33 homebuilders that operate in the United States, accounting for close to 6% of the total market share. Margaret Whelan, founder of Widelan Advisory, said these firms are well-capitalized and bring patient, low-cost capital. They are investing across land, development, and housing with a long runway.
