Project Eleven, a startup focused on quantum security, has awarded its "Q-Day Prize" to independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli who successfully cracked a 15-bit encryption key using publicly available quantum hardware. This feat is the largest public demonstration of a quantum attack on the "elliptic curve" cryptography that secures over $2.5 trillion in digital assets, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. This achievement represents a 512-fold increase in difficulty compared to the previous record set seven months ago. Lelli's achievement was completed using cloud-accessible hardware that anyone can rent. Developers are now working to develop "post-synth" defenses against these machines.
