‘People still do care;’ 35 years since Colorado Springs area plane crash, former city employee recalls being on scene

On March 3, 1991, United Airlines flight 585 crashed in the Widefield area, killing all 25 people on board. The Boeing 737 was traveling from Denver to Colorado Springs when it went down near the Colorado Springs airport. Former city employee David Zelenok recalls being on the scene and witnessing parts of the wreckage. After ten years of investigating, the NTSB stated that a rudder likely turned in the opposite direction of what pilots commanded, causing the plane to crash.
