Canadian province poaches over 400 U.S. health workers, eyes Oregon for more

British Columbia is increasing its recruitment strategy to attract American doctors and nurses, with a focus on Oregon and Washington. Over 400 U.S.-trained health care workers have accepted jobs within British Columbia’s health care system since March 2025, including 89 doctors, 260 nurses, 42 nurse practitioners and 23 allied health workers. The recruitment comes as British Columbia faces persistent health care staffing shortages. The province launched a targeted campaign last year and began marketing to U.K. workers that summer with video ads focusing on nearby states like Washington and Oregon. The success of the recruitment efforts is already being felt in communities across the province. However, there are still challenges in British Columbia, including ongoing staffing shortages and rising demand from an aging population.
