At 87, San Jose Sharks Masters League player Ed Asato, who skates in the league's over-60 division, still maintains his enthusiasm for the sport. The league, which draws players from around the Bay Area, includes fathers, grandfathers, and players who first played as children. They say the game keeps them physically active, socially connected, and helps maintain camaraderie. Dean Tait, the adult hockey manager at Sharks Ice, grew up in Quebec where hockey is deeply woven into everyday life. Tait moved west and eventually to the Bay area in 2002, where he joined the over-35 division in 2008. He now manages the rink's adult leagues, which include about 2,500 players, 16 referees and 40 scorekeepers.
