Judge extends order improving Minnesota immigration detainees’ access to lawyers at Whipple Building

U.S. District Judge Nancy Brasel has extended her order to improve access to basic legal services to detainees at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Minnesota. The ruling comes after attorneys and noncitizens testified about difficulties in communicating with detainees due to lack of communication or transferring an immigrant almost immediately to another facility in Texas. Brasel found inconsistencies in ICE Deputy Field Office Director Tauria Rich's testimony during a hearing about conditions at Whipple, including that the government did not detain people overnight, despite detainees' statements of being held several days. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to the ruling.
