The California bald eagle couple Jackie and Shadows' chicks, named Sandy and Luna, have been named following a vote by third-grade third graders. The Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit monitoring the eagles, received over 3,000 submissions for Sandy, which was selected after Sandy Steers, the executive director of the nonprofit. The chicks had previously been named Chick 1 and Chick 2. The contest was launched on April 15 and public had until April 26 to submit their names. The differences between the chicks' appearance and their gender were noted in a social media post.
