AI is starting to squeeze entry-level jobs in the D.C.-area

Artificial intelligence is rapidly disrupting the job market in the D.C.-area, affecting younger and entry-level workers particularly hard. A report by the Virginia Chamber Foundation estimates that 1.5 million jobs could be affected, but these jobs are likely to be automated or reshaped, potentially reducing future roles. The state saw the fastest growth in ChatGPT use nationwide last year, and business use of AI has more than doubled since 2023. Software developers, managers, customer service reps and retail salespeople are among those with the highest risk of exposure. A separate report by The Greater Washington Partnership also found that AI is already affecting the tech labor market in this region. However, there is an opportunity for workers to adapt to the technology.
