A new iPhone app, Food Additive Lens, uses artificial intelligence to help consumers and professionals better understand ingredients and additives in food products. The free app, designed for iPhone 14 and newer models, scans ingredient labels and provides clear explanations about additives within seconds. The tool was developed by Yihang Feng while he was a graduate student at the University of Connecticut and is designed to make reliable food information more accessible and combat misinformation. The app uses AI to analyze ingredient lists and explain the purpose and safety of additives in plain language. Unlike other consumer-facing nutrition tools, Foodadditive Lens uses a wide range of authoritative data sources, including the USDA’s Global Branded Food Products Database and over 4,000 FDA-approved additives.
