President Donald Trump has requested China's help in resolving the global oil crisis, two weeks before his scheduled meeting with China's leader, Xi Jinping. This comes as Iran has effectively cut off one-fifth of the world's oil supply, leading to price spikes and fears of energy shortages. China has little incentive to comply with Trump's demands. The US is also calling on other nations, including France, Japan, South Korea and Britain, to secure the strait. This request is extraordinary as it involves asking China to risk its own military assets in a war the US started against a Beijing-friendly nation. However, China is better positioned than the rest of Asia to handle a prolonged energy crisis. The conflict in Iran has overshadowed the Beijing summit and has led to domestic backlash from rising fuel prices.
