The Illinois House and Senate are in session at the same time for the first time during this spring legislative session, and immigration policy is back at the forefront in the state. This comes after the shooting death of 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman, which has brought the focus of U.S. immigration policy and recent ice enforcement efforts in Chicago. The suspect in the case was a Venezuelan national who was in the country without legal permission and had been brought here in 2023. This has led to criticism of Governor JB Pritzker for his sanctuary policies in Chicago and Mayor Brandon Johnson for its sanctuary policies.
