Crypto fight at center of FISA extension poised to escalate

A bid by conservatives to ban the Federal Reserve from issuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) fell short, but this is expected to escalate as both chambers consider another extension of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act’s (FISA) warrantless surveillance powers. The House initially passed a bill that included the CBDC provision, but it ultimately failed to pass a Senate measure extending Section 702 without a CBDC. Members of the far-right House Freedom Caucus are preparing for their next clash over the issue. The prospect of a government-issued digital token could potentially be used to monitor Americans’ financial transactions. While the crypto industry generally supports banning government issued digital tokens, this has not been a major priority for the sector.
