The US economy added 178,000 jobs in March, the highest monthly gain in over a year, according to the March jobs report. This was a significant increase from February's loss of 133,000 and the unemployment rate was down to 4.3%. Healthcare led the recovery, with construction and leisure contributing. However, the same economy is also absorbing the highest tariff burden since 1943 due to the Trump administration's 15% global tariff, which is generating $30.4 billion in monthly customs duties. Yale's Budget Lab estimates that the average US household is absorbing a $650–$780 annual cost increase from current tariff levels, rising to $1,130–$1,340 if the Section 122 authority is made permanent. Meanwhile, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warns of a "large exodus" of businesses from New York City under new Mayor Zohran Mamdani's proposed tax hikes. The state budget crisis exacerbates a structural revenue gap amid global turmoil, with lower unit sales tax receipts and increased federal spending cutting federal transfers to Albany.
