An Idaho state Senate has taken up a bill that could make it a crime for transgender people to use public bathrooms based on their gender identity, making it a felony for a first offense punishable by up to a year in jail, and a second offense within five years could be charged as a felony, resulting in a prison sentence of up to five years. The bill, already approved by the Idaho House, would require individuals to use bathrooms, locker rooms, and similar facilities based on gender identity in both government buildings and private businesses. Supporters argue the bill is necessary for safety and privacy in sex-segregated spaces, but opponents argue it could create an enforcement problem that could lead to suspicion and violence.
