On Friday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and President Donald Trump designated the AI company Anthropic as a supply chain risk to national security. The move was seen as a contrast to the increasing polarization and culture-war mindset that infects Washington. Until this past week, Anthropic had an exclusive relationship with the Department of Defense for its tools to be used in classified settings. However, the Pentagon disagreed with these restrictions, and soon after, the DOD announced a deal with rival OpenAI, which largely includes similar parameters. The disagreement between tech-focused founders, researchers, and advocates is becoming more prominent politically as the issue of AI rises in importance.
