The current Farm Bill, in its current form, protects some of the largest agricultural businesses in the world and marginalizes small and organic food farmers who want to build a healthier America. The bill also ignores the needs of poor children and families. The current version of the bill rejects many of the goals of the Make America Healthy Again Commission, which identified specific ingredients associated with type 2 diabetes and child obesity. The draft legislation would benefit large farmers of corn, a key ingredient in the high fructose corn syrup market, and would improve existing programs for corn growers. Food insecurity is also a concern, with nearly 48 million Americans facing this challenge in 2024. The Farm Bill is an opportunity for Congress to support important food access initiatives such as the Supplemental Assistance Program and SNAP.
