Trump pressures nations to assist with securing Strait of Hormuz
Published on March 16, 2026.
President Donald Trump has demanded that seven countries, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and Britain, send warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz, where about one-fifth of the world's traded oil normally flows. However, no commitments have been made as oil prices soar during the Iran war. The president declined to name the countries heavily reliant on Middle East crude that the administration is negotiating with to join a coalition to police the waterway. He stated that the United States does not need such assistance due to its own oil access. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran has been approached by several countries seeking safe passage for their vessels. The International Energy Agency is urging global action to lower oil prices, describing the potential for emergency oil stocks to be released immediately as soon as possible.
