Mamdani Lifts NYC TikTok Ban for City Employees, but with Some Unusual Restrictions

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has reinstated the TikTok app for city employees, despite previous ban by his predecessor, Eric Adams, citing it as a security threat to the city's technical networks. The restrictions restrict use of TikTok on devices owned by the company, ByteDance, which was responsible for some of the creepy surveillance activities in 2022. The city-owned devices cannot contain sensitive or restricted data and cannot be used for email, internal systems, or privileged access. However, these restrictions may make sense, as the U.S. version of the app uses location data in controversial ways.
