Pear Jam rocker Eddie Vedder recalled a chaotic horseback ride with Bruce Springsteen, which he said reinforced his fear of horses. The incident occurred during a visit with Springsteen's wives, Jill Vedder and Patti Scialfa, and during a ride that led to a horse taking off into a forest. Vedder described the incident as "very odd," while Springsteen gave clear instructions and Vedder was trying to act not terrified. The pair had previously discussed the incident in a chat for Amazon Music and later performed Springsteen’s 2002 song “My City of Ruins” at the 2009 Kennedy Center Honors.
