The WNBA's new collective bargaining agreement states that teams must obtain player consent before trading a pregnant player, a clause being nicknamed "The Dearica Hamby Rule". This rule was introduced after former Las Vegas Aces player, Dearica Hameby, was traded while pregnant three years into the season. Hamby, now plays for the Los Angeles Sparks, made choices she believed would make a difference for other working mothers. She was traded to the Sparks after learning she was pregnant with her son, Legend, in 2023. Shortly after the trade, Hamby alleged she was lied to, bullied, manipulated and discriminated against. She filed a federal lawsuit against the Aces and the WNBA in August 2024. The parties have agreed to dismiss the case in its entirety and a jury is set to decide on the outcome of the case.
