An AI Data Center Is Coming for Her Backyard and Century-Old Family Cemetery

As AI companies compete with technology companies, data centers are increasingly being targeted across the country, particularly in rural communities where they lack familiarity with industrial development. One project is reportedly set to be developed on a 15-acre property in Muscogee County, GA. The property, which has been owned by Debbie Jackson's husband's family since the 1800s and holds a cemetery with 22 graves, is less than 2 miles from the proposed footprint of Project Ruby, a $5.18 billion hyperscale data center being developed by Habitat Real Estate Partners. Once a project has been approved, homeowners' limited options are limited to litigation, which can create public pressure for developers to compromise on safety, noise, light pollution, and water contamination. However, if a development involves federal funding, residents may have more access to challenging the project.
