A video shows a rat dragging a pizza slice twice its entire body between subway tracks in New York City, where it is often seen as the largest rat population in the city, often referred to as the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), an omnivorous scavenger known as Norway rats. The rat population is often estimated at around 3 million, but there is no official citywide rat census. The rodent problem has been exacerbated by restaurant closures, changing trash patterns, and outdoor dining changing where food is available. The popular transport app, Transit, has launched a feature where users can report rat sightings in the subway system, with thousands of reports logged through its rat-reporting feature. The population of New York is dominated by brown rats, also called Norway rats, which are native to northern China and nearby Asia.
