Frito-Lays introduced Wow potato chips in 1998, a low-fat snack that was later discontinued due to the addition of olestra, a calorie-free fat substitute used instead of frying oil. Despite this success, the added ingredient could cause intestinal upset and rectal leakage, leading to an embarrassing side effect. The company's product was later rebranded as Lay's Light and discontinued in 2016. Olestra is still an FDA-approved food additive, and as of 2003, it no longer requires a warning label. Despite its reputation as a food additive and its potential side effects, it has been controversial and not widely recognized.
