Retail, grocery, and restaurant chains are set to close hundreds of locations in 2026, as part of a shift away from underperforming brick-and-mortar stores and towards e-commerce. Over 1,400 stores across the US are expected to close, including those of Kroger, Walgreens, and mall and apparel staples like Francesca’s, Carter’'s, and Yankee Candle. Carter's plans to close about 100 of its children's and baby apparel stores by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, Grocery Outlet is closing 36 underperforming stores, two-thirds of them in the eastern U.S., CEO Jason Potter stated that the company won't exit any state entirely. Other retailers include Macy's, Pizza Hut, and Saks Off 5th, Saks Global's outlet brand.
