Kings County, California, is one of 15 California jurisdictions that have been warned by Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) for failing to meet state housing law requirements. The warning comes as California moves to enforce compliance across the state. Kings County's incorporated cities, Avenal, Hanford, Lemoore and Corcoran, were all named in the warning. The county has stated that it is currently finalizing an updated housing element plan and remains committed to full compliance with the state's requirements. Since 2021, Newsom's Housing Accountability Unit has taken over 1,200 enforcement actions, unlocking over 12,000 thousand units, including 3,600 affordable units.
