A jury in the trial of former FirstEnergy executives, Chuck Jones and Michael Dowling, has ended without a verdict. Jones is accused of bribing Sam Randazzo with $4.3 million shortly before he became the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio chairman. Prosecutors claim Jones then worked on FirstEnergy's behalf to secure the passage of House Bill 6, which gave a $1.3 billion ratepayer bailout to two aging nuclear plants. The initial settlement was reached between FirstEnergy and IEU-Ohio, a trade group of industrial business owners that opposed a FirstEnergy surcharge. The defense argues that Jones approved the payment not as a bribe, but a legal settlement extension.
