The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has identified the safest vehicles in 2026, with only one large pickup truck from the Detroit Three not qualifying for the top spot. The study rates a vehicle as good, acceptable, marginal, or poor on various safety tests. However, higher standards, including increased standards for back seat safety features, led to several vehicles that previously won the award to fall short. Not a single vehicle from General Motors, Stellantis or Ford Motor Co. was among the 45 vehicles that earned the highest ranking, a Top Safety Pick Plus, earning them a total of 63 winners. While no minicars, minivans or small pickups were awarded this year, the institute credited poor performance for backseat passengers in the moderate overlap test.
