In rural New Mexico, Airbnb hosts are building a new kind of tourism economy, with the company highlighting 20 lesser-known and rural destinations across the country in its first “America Off-the-Map“ report. The report also highlighted a roadside saloon near Pinos Altos, one of several local businesses Airbnb host Danlee Winegar recommends to guests. Last year's gross revenue for the property was $43,000. Of 2,000 U.S. adults polled in January, 86% expressed interest in visiting remote or rural destinations, according to a Focaldata survey commissioned by Airbnb. The company's global head of policy, Laura Spanjian, believes that more people are seeking experiences closer to home but off the beaten path. New Mexico stands to benefit from its abundance of rural counties and 54% of the state lacks hotel accommodations.
