A new AI translation tool, Gaming Alexandria Researcher, has divided the video game preservation community, with some members objecting to the use of funds for an error-prone translation effort. The project was part of an effort by coder Dustin Hubbard to organize scanned Japanese gaming magazines and translate their OCR text. However, many members of the community expressed dissatisfaction with this use of money from the platform, arguing that it was a misuse of funds. Hubbard issued an apology in a post on his blog, stating he had been working on an improved automated OCR and translation process using the Google Gemini AI model.
