Not all business owners: How Business for Good is building a new voice in San Diego

Business for Good, a local organization that aims to give voice to small businesses in San Diego, is gaining momentum and gaining traction. The group, which started in 2017 as a spin-off of the Main Street Alliance, initially attracted 300 members in its first two years. However, funding from the Open Society Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded by billionaire George Soros, ended years earlier than expected. Business for Good changed its model by relying on membership fees and becoming a volunteer-run group, making it a popular option for micro businesses and so-called solopreneurs who share its politics. The organization is also teaching business leaders how to leverage power at the local level. The membership has increased in the last two years due to increased dues and expectations of a return of brick-and-mortar members who fell away during the pandemic period when many businesses had to prioritize survival during pandemic.
