The Austin Chronicle's former restaurant, Vespaio, was a high-profile attraction for The Chronicle writer, Bob Greene, who recalls the restaurant's three owners as a big draw. The food and drink were always exceptional, but what kept him coming back was the personal service provided by Alan Lazarus, owner Claude Benayoun, and Scott Bolin. Greene credits Vespaio's staff for creating a happy atmosphere and providing an enjoyable experience for both customers and staff alike. The restaurant was also praised for its customer service and exceptional service. Greene's memories began with a bottle of Rittenhouse 100 Proof Bottled-In-Bond Rye given to Greene by Tom Upthegrove, who knew my drink (Manhattan straight up) and kept it hidden in the back for me. Greene recalls being introduced to the audience at a Food & Wine Festival for his efforts to introduce Fred MacMurray's daughter to introduce her father's most famous film, Double Indemnity.
