The Los Angeles City Council has approved the speed camera program, a statewide initiative that allows cities to ticket speeding drivers remotely. The city is expected to install up to 125 speed cameras across the city and test them between April and July, with a 60-day warning period set for drivers. After that period, drivers will receive fines based on their speed over the speed limit. The cameras can only be installed in state-defined safety corridors, school zones, and areas with a history of street racing or sideshows. Critics argue that the program will negatively impact low-income communities and people of color. The council also instructed LADOT to expand its Community Assistance Parking Program to allow low income and homeless people to perform community service in lieu of paying a penalty.
