Inside the unique design of the Ross Island Bridge

The Ross Island Bridge, which opened in 1926, carries over 55,000 vehicles per day and is the only bridge connecting Portland's South Waterfront district to the Southeast side. The 3,700-foot-long cantilever deck truss bridge was designed to accommodate the city's growing automobile traffic and was not designed to raise for river traffic. It was originally painted black but underwent a "phthalo blue" makeover in 1965. The bridge also features large pipes that move water from the Bull Run reservoir system to Portland's west side.
