Michael J. Fortner and his wife, who had a cat named Rum Cay for 13 years, decided to adopt a dog after their cat died. They researched dog breeds and found an ad for a Benji-like dog in a community newspaper. The owner, Vera, offered to lend them a dog and reimbursed for the kennel boarding fees. They found a dog in an Indiana rescue shelter and renamed him Scottie-Shenanigans. After a dozen years, they had to say goodbye to their beloved pet due to cancer.
