The Supreme Court's decision to uphold a separate music piracy case against internet service provider Cox may impact the major music publishers' lawsuit accusing Elon Musk's X of widespread copyright infringement. The publishers are arguing that X is liable for slow-walking its response to takedown requests and failing to terminate users who repeatedly post infringing music. The case is being brought by all three major publishers (Universal Music Publishing Group, Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music), along with several indie publishers. The suit alleges that X profits handsomely from infringement on compositions on its platform. However, X maintains that blanket licensing agreements with major social media companies like Meta, TikTok and Snapchat do not require such licenses.
