Missing scientists: The expanded list of 13 disappearances or deaths under scrutiny

A House of Representatives committee is investigating the disappearances or deaths of 10 people in the past three years, including those of scientists and personnel connected to U.S. nuclear secrets or rocket technology. The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has also added three more cases potentially warranting scrutiny. The list includes Anthony Chavez, a construction foreman at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Monica Reza, director of materials processing at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Steven Garcia, a government contractor with security clearance. Michael David Hicks, 59, of Sunland, Calif. was a scientist at NASA's Jet Propuls Lab Project until 2022 and died in 2023. Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a Physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’ ionion of Technology, was reportedly shot and killed on Dec. 15, 2025, at his home near Boston.
