Chicago Sign Museum wants the city’s hand-made signs saved before they’re gone

The Chicago Sign Museum, founded by Kelsey McClellan and Andrew McClellans, aims to educate on historic Chicago signs and actively participate in their preservation. The museum, which does not have a physical space yet, has hosted sign tours around the city and has helped business owners restore vintage signs and educate sign owners about the city’s updated code. The founder and curator of the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, Tod Swormstedt, highlighted the importance of hand-made signs in telling stories of Chicago's history and personal experiences. Signs often become endangered when corporations buy up locally owned stores and sell the signs to private collectors on their way out. However, signs are disappearing due to expensive maintenance and restrictions on updating old signs.
