Massachusetts midwives, doulas push for funding, cultural shift

Midwives, doulas and maternal health advocates in Massachusetts are pushing for a cultural shift to expand services to pregnant patients. This comes despite the state's high-end hospitals, where Black women are more than twice as likely to die from childbirth-related complications compared to their white counterparts. The implementation of the 2024 maternal health equity law has led to challenges for the midwifery and doula sectors, including funding shortages and decreased insurance reimbursements from commercial plans for midwives performing the same work as doctors. State Sen. Liz Miranda, who led efforts to pass the law, said this is just the beginning of the process. Several bills are being proposed to ensure the 2024 law is fully funded and implemented.
