Bishop Emanuel Shaleta of the San Diego area has resigned amid charges that he embezzled $270,000 from his parish. The bishop pleaded not guilty to 16 felony charges, including money laundering, following his arrest at San Diego International Airport. The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV had accepted Shaleta's resignation under the code of canon law for Eastern Rite churches, which allows for the pope to agree if a bishop asks to step down. The allegations stem from monthly rental payments of more than $30,000 allegedly missing from a tenant of the church's social hall. If convicted, Shaleta could face 15 years in prison.
