A and leftist groups have united to protest against the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in New York, expressing concerns about concentrated wealth and power in the industry. The event, held at St. Michael’s Church in Manhattan, was part of a series of nationwide events by Humans First, a grassroots movement that aims to become a voice for Americans who are concerned about the rapid growth of AI development. The group, which argues that AI should be subject to more democratic control and less "big money" influence, is already facing scrutiny from Elon Musk and the White House AI czar and venture capitalist David Sacks, who shared a critical essay about Humans First on X, which was viewed over 21 million times. The clash between these groups emerged after Sacks shared an article alleging that Humans First was set up to attract conservative supporters by people with strong links to Effective Altruism, a social movement that supports causes based on evidence of positive impact. The Center for AI Safety, founded by Jordan Schachtel, has been accused of attempting to make AI safety issues more palatable to a more politically palatable for a conservative audience.
