The fight over reforms to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), a key law that allows warrantless monitoring of Americans' communications has become more contentious due to concerns that AI will enhance state surveillance. Privacy advocates and national security hawks have warned that AI could allow faster and more invasive analysis of vast amounts of information, including communications swept up in foreign intelligence programs and commercial data. Section 702 allows the government to collect the communications of foreigners abroad but also allows it to search for Americans' messages, emails and other transmissions from Americans when they contact them. The White House has pushed congressional Republicans to pass an extension of Section 702 without changes. A new version of the spy law, introduced by House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., would extend Section 702 for three years, but did not add a requirement for search warrants sought by some Republicans.
