A traffic light has been installed at the intersection of East Vernon and Wadsworth avenues in South Los Angeles, two years after a 12-year-old boy was killed by a driver while walking home from school. The traffic light was installed after community members lobbied for the change. Derick Serrano, a 6th grader at Carver Middle School, was fatally hit on April 18, 2024. The area is known for dangerous traffic and for reckless drivers. The community is calling for additional funding for traffic safety measures throughout the city.
